Megh Cabinet approves to tabled Commission of Inquiry in Assembly

Shillong, Apr 17 (UNI) The Meghalaya government today gave its seal of approval to table the judicial Commission of Inquiry on the September 30, 2005 police firing on April 19, the concluding day of the ongoing budget session.

The Cabinet was briefed on the ramification of the enquiry, submitted by Justice D N Baruah, inquiring into the Williamnagar incident and Justice D N Chaudhuri probing the Tura firing incident, Urban Affairs Minister and government spokesman Paul Lyngdoh told reporters here.

Nine people, including women, were killed, while scores injured on September 30, 2005 in police firing at Tura and Williamnagar over the issue of revamping and restructuring the Meghalaya Board of School Education, which have its headquarters at Tura, West Garo Hills district.

At Tura, four people were killed in police firing and many were others injured. In Williamnagar, the district headquarters, East Garo Hills, another five were killed in police firing and several others injured.

The government will take appropriate action as per the report, Mr Lyngdoh said, while refusing to spell out the contents of the report.

Mr Lyngdoh also said that the government is not averse to discuss on the report if the members of the assembly wanted to debate on the findings of the commission of inquiry.
