Cricket bookies escape dragnet of Haryana police
Fatehabad, Apr 17 (UNI) The Haryana police raided several places in search of bookies involved in betting on the Australia-Sri Lanka World cup cricket match played in the West Indies yesterday.
However the police which had the mobile numbers of several bookies of the area, had to return empty handed.
Official sources said today that a local advocate had approached the police with the mobile numbers of bookies and had revealed that bets involving large sums of money had been placed on the match.
The advocate had supplied mobile numbers belonging a number of bookies, who were listed as Naresh, Sahnku, Meshu, Sanjay, Ram, Tapwan, Lakhu and Pawan.
On the directions of the SP Saurabh Singh, a police party led by DSP Harish Dutta last night raided several places near Rajiv Chowk, Sunder Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Aggarwal Colony in search of the bookies.
Sources said that these bookies got a wind of the police action in advance and they switched over to new mobile numbers overnight.
Some new numbers of the bookies have come to the notice of the police today.
The police, according to sources, is working on the call details of the old numbers and is also summoning details of identity proof of these numbers.
The police had a couple of days back busted a betting racket in Hisar. On Sunday last the Punjab Police had busted a similar racket in Barnala town.
