New Delhi, Apr 17 (UNI) Centre of Trade Unions (CITU) today wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh, on behalf of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) employees, opposing the Planning Commission's directive to modernise the Kolkata and Chennai Airports with the involvement of private players.

The Union said a report issued by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia had directed the modernisation of the Kolkata Airport through the joint venture route and the Chennai Airport through public-private participation route.

CITU noted that when Dr Singh had met Left parties in connection with the issue of the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai Airports, he had assured them that the modernisation of other airports would be undertaken by the AAI.

A Tripartite Committee was also constituted for the purpose to consider the issues of modernisation and employee-related problems, they added.

The letter also noted that despite Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel giving a written assurance that CITU would be consulted prior to the modernisation of other airports, this has not been done.

''The directive has shocked the employees of the AAI as well as its representative" the CITU said in the letter.

CITU warned it would oppose the move and will urge the government to stick to their commitment to it, adding that the steps by the government will undermine the role of AAI, the privatisation of which is against the UPA's National Common Minimum Programme.
