Investigation into Tata Hospital rape case in progress: Patil

Mumbai, Apr 16 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today said a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-level probe was in progress regarding rape of a 16-year-old cancer patient at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital here.

Making a statement in the Legislative Assembly, Mr Patil said the incident was brought to his notice three days ago and he had ordered a DCP-level inquiry.

The examination of medical certificates is on and a detailed statement on the inquiry will be made in the House before the conclusion of the day's proceedings today, he added.

The issue was raised through an adjournment notice by BJP member Devendra Phadanvis after the Question Hour.

He demanded that the state government should provide all medical help to the victim who is in the last stage of cancer.

Dagdu Sakpal (Shiv Sena), in whose assembly constituency the hospital is situated, said there was lot of anger about the incident.

''Even though the incident came to light about five days ago, it is surprising that no arrests have been made,'' he added.

Shobha Phadanvis (BJP) said the case should be treated sensitively as the victim is a minor and a cancer patient in the last stage, while at the same time she is pregnant.

Bhai Jagtap (Congress) felt it was wrong to suspect only ward boys in the hospital. The doctors and hospital administration staff can also be under suspicion, Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar cited reports that the victim's father had suspected two ward boys.
