Hearings on Nandigram, Singur cases postponed
Kolkata, Apr 16: The much awaited hearings on Nandigram killing and land acquisition for Tata Motors' small car project at Singur were postponed today as the West Bengal Government prayed for time to go through the documents submitted by the litigants.
The hearings on the death of 14 people in police firing in Nandigram and land acquisition for Tata Motors had been fixed before a division bench headed by Chief Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar.
But the cases came up for hearing before the division bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh and Biswanath Samaddar as the Chief Justice was on leave.
State Advocate General Balai Roy pleaded for two days to scrutinise the affidavit placed by the petitioners on the Nandigram killings.
The court admitted his pleas and fixed the date on April 18. The next hearing on land acquisition at Singur was deferred till April 27.
The hearing on Nandigram incident began after the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court took up the case suo moto, expressing grave concern on the death of 14 villagers on March 14.
The case of land acquisition at Singur was moved before the court by Association for Democratic Rights( APDR), a local rights group.
