Community organisations hold rally to protest elopement of lovers

Surat, Apr 16 (UNI) Some community organisations held a vehicle rally here today to protest the ''abduction of girls'' from their community and submitted a memorandum to the city Police Commissioner R M S Brar.

The rally was organised to protest the elopment of a girl from the Agarwal community with a boy belonging to a minority community on April 13.

The rally began from the Agrasen Bhavan here and concluded at the Collectorate.

Around 500 vehicles participated in it, the organisers of the rally said.

The cloth shops in the Textile Market area of the city also observed a ''bandh'' till noon to express solidarity with the organisations.

Yesterday, the Agarwal community members organised a meeting at Agarwal Samaj Hall here and protested the abduction of a girl, belonging to their community, by a 23-year old youth.

Umra police said Jagdish Agarwal, a textile merchant in the city, had complained on Saturday that his daughter Kushi Agarwal was abducted by a youth, Kabir Naalband, and the couple was arrested from Mumbai yesterday.
