Chennai, Apr 15 (UNI) Citing security concerns, former Supreme Court Justice V R Krishna Iyer today sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to halt the dredging works at Ramar Palam (Adam's Bridge) for the proposed Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP).

In a letter addressed to Dr Singh, the jurist said SSCP would be detrimental to India's territorial interests.

''Our nation will be weaker and may suffer new dangers with American presence in the Sethusamudram waters by doing what for centuries has never been considered necessary or feasible or in any manner advantageous to the people of India,'' he cautioned.

Stating that building any bridge or other construction at the Ramar Palam would be hostile to the nation and its 'Swaraj,' Justice Iyer urged Dr Singh to reconsider it.
