Backward organisations decry stay on reservation by SC
Patna, Apr 15 (UNI) An association of deprived section and extremely backward classes of the society, today decried the decision of the apex court staying the reservation for students of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in premier educational institutions in the country.
Addressing the members of the association, who were on dhrana here in protest against the apex court's decision, its president Kishori Das said there was no justification to defer the reservation to OBC students in educational institutions on the ground of fresh caste based census to ascertain their population percentage in the country.
He said that full bench of the Supreme Court had already accepted the recommendation of Mandal Commission in permitting 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in government service, which was based on caste census conducted in 1931.
It was ironical to deny the reservation facilities to OBC students in educational institutions on the same basis, he added.
''If the stay by the apex court on reservation to OBC students in the central government services was not withdrawan soon, it would lead to unrest and caste tension in the society,'' he warned.
