Tamil New Year films shrouded in trend of uncertainty
Chennai, Apr 14 (UNI) There is only one formula for box office success of a film these days in Tamil cinema. And it's not the star value strictly or for that matter a brand name' in music like an A R Rahman or Yuvan Shankar Raja, anymore. It is the novelty or reality of the storyline, reflecting a slice of life.
This is what keeps the directors of a 'rich crop' of new films which hit the screens after a long time, on the auspicious Tamil New Year festival ('puthhandu) this year in Kollywood- the Tamil film industry, sitting with their fingers crossed, as their 'products' are out in the theatres, so to speak.
Industry sources told UNI, a top hero or an actress, combining with other top stars like comedian Vivek for instance, is no longer a guarantee that the film would hit the bull's eye in the box office oriented commercial cinema. ''A few films like 'Jillendru Kaathu Vandade', starring top star-artistes, like Surya, his real life partner Jyothika and a few other popular stars, was a declared flop'', a leading PRO for actors like Kamal Hassan and Director Shankar of 'Indian' fame said.'' Agreeing with him, another Kollywood source said even national award winning actor Vikram's new release 'Majaa', based on Malayalam hit 'Thommanum Makkalum' starring superstar Mammooty failed at the box office, coming after Shankar's spectacular hit 'Anniyan' .
Thus, it's all 'experienced guess work' and for some Kollywood experts instinct whether the Tamil New Year releases 'Mayakannadi', 'Kaanal Neer 'Unnale, Unnale'- which has Bollywood actress Kajol's sister Tanisha Mukerji making her debut in Kollywood, 'Arpudha Theevu' and 'Madurai Veeran'.
