Aizawl, Apr 13 (UNI) Expressing concern over the plight of women, the Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA) have urged the government to implement the protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, without delay.

Despite the Centre's notification to implement the act in all the states except Jammu and Kashmir on October 26, 2006, it is yet to be implemented in Mizoram.

'' The absence of the Act has become an obstacle in our efforts to protect women from any kind of violence,'' YWCA Vice-President Boichhingpuii told UNI.

The YWCA had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Zoramthanga on April, to take necessary measures in this regard. Ms Boichhingpuii also disclosed that domestic violence against women is increasing in the state.

'' We can rightly say Mizoram is not free from domestic violence.

We have dealt with more than 540 cases, since YWCA's formation in 1996, but have also faced a lot of problems in providing justice, to the victims due to absence of the Act,''she added.

Another main concern of the YWCA is ordination of women in the churches. Despite the fact that Mizo Christian women are actively involved in church activities, this is the only state, which have not ordained women theologians.

The YWCA have also urged to pass the Indian Christian Marriage Act.

Various Mizo women bodies have preferred the Act to the existing Mizo customary law which they regard as ''men-favoured''.

The YWCA has also expressed concern over the 'self-imposed' dowry system in the state.
