Chennai, Apr 12 (UNI) Absence of an Arabian language translator led to the detention of a Singapore-bound passenger, once wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), before he was released after obtaining clearance from the CBI in New Delhi.

The ordeal of 40-year-old Thangappa began when he entered the immigration area before boarding a flight to Singapore at 2330 hrs last night.

Airport sources today said on verification of his passport, computer records revealed that he was wanted by the CBI in connection with a cheque cheating case in 2005 at Dubai.

Chief Immigration Officer H C Mohanty immediately cancelled his visit and informed the CBI in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Mr Thangappa pleaded ignorance and said he was acquitted by a Dubai court in the case.

He explained that he and his friend started a business venture in Dubai and the latter failed a forgery case against Thangappa at Dubai in 2005. However, both of them agreed for a settlement and the court had closed the case in 2006.

Knowing that he might face some problems, Thangappa carried all the relevant documents with him and also showed them to the Immigration authorities. Since the documents were written in Arabic, the officials could not read it as there was no Arabian language translator available.

He was later handed over to the Airport police officials, who accepted his request and waited for clearance from Delhi, instead of remanding him.

Mr Thangappa heaved a sigh of relief when the CBI officials at Delhi informed the authorities here that he was cleared by the court and that the investigating agency no longer required him. The CBI also said that he could be allowed to travel abroad.

After all the hassles, Thangappa would be boarding a flight to Singapore tonight.
