Punjab Cabinet raises retirement age of medical college teachers

Chandigarh, Apr 12 (UNI) The Punjab Cabinet today decided to raise the retirement age of teachers by two years in medical, dental and ayurvedic colleges of the state in order to overcome the shortage in the teaching faculities of these institututions.

Teachers would now retire at 60 years instead of 58.

This decision was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minster Parkash Singh Badal.

This decision had been taken in order to save medical colleges from derecognition from the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI had recently taken note of the shortage of teachers in the government medical colleges of the state.

The Cabinet also accorded approval to fill vacant posts in the medical, dental and ayurvedic colleges by re-employing teachers who retired during the 2006-07 academic year. This step has been taken to fill vacancies in those sujects where there is an acute shortage of teaching staff.

However re-employment would only be given to those teachers who have an unblemished service record.

In another significant decision, the Cabinet also approved to make amendments in the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets Act, 1961 to bring an ordinance to supersede the nominated Market Committees.

The Cabinet also approved the opening of a district treasury at Tarn Taran and sub treasury at Khadoor Sahib.
