New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) Terming space exploration a ''green technology'', President A P J Abdul Kalam today said the greatest asset of these technologies was even while they were perfected for space research, they become the tool for enhancing the quality of life on earth.

Addressing the students of Boston University through multi-media teleconferencing from Rashtrapati Bhavan on ''The future of space exploration: Solution to earthly problems'', Dr Kalam -- himself a rocket scientist -- noted the humankind will run out of fossil fuels during this century.

''Thus it is possible to herald the next industrial revolution using the space technology,'' he said.

Observing that solar flux on earth is available for just 6-8 hours every day whereas incident radiation on space solar power station would be 24 hrs every day, Dr Kalam asked ''What better vision can there be for the future of space exploration, than participating in a global mission for perennial supply of renewable energy from space.'' Helium-3 from the Moon could prove a valuable fuel for the nuclear reactors, he added.

On the developments in space technology in India, he said earth observation satellites having unique resolution were deployed for survey of water bodies for maximising the storage during the rainy season. Using space solar satellites in Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology for desalinisation of sea water can bring down the cost of the process substantially.

Dr Kalam said new design practices and technologies were constantly increasing the lives of satellites but there was a need for extending their lives through in-orbit maintenance stations.

Turning to the mining in planets, Dr Kalam said it would require innovative methods for exploring, processing and transporting large quanitities of rare materials to Earth.

The Moon could become a potential transportation hub for inter-planetary travel and would protect the inter-planetary communication systems from Earth's radio emissions. It would also be a source for construction materials and low gravity manufacturing held tremendous promise for mankind, especially in the field of medicines, he said.
