Only people of J and K can root out militancy: Chief Minister
Jammu, Apr 12 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today urged the people to come forward to wipe out militancy which has badly affected the state since 1989.
Addressing public meetings after laying foundations for Rs 53 crore Khandi Canal Project at Malonoo in Thathri and Rs 10.71 crore PHE project at Jai in Bhaderwah, Mr Azad said, ''Till people come forward against the militants, the menace of terrorism cannot be eradicated completely.'' The 38.60 km canal being constructed by irrigation department is likely to irrigate 5500 acre of land in the area, giving a boost to agriculture production and opening greater-employment opportunities in skilled and unskilled sectors, he said.
The Chief Minister said the extension of irrigation facilities in the potential areas will give a considerable fillip to rural economy and boost agriculture production. ''It will also open new areas for employment generation,'' he added.
He also stressed the need for exploiting this potential for uplifting the rural economy.
''Attention is being focused on the development of far-flung and under-developed areas,'' he said, adding that every unit of administration and field agencies have been geared up to speed up the development works in these areas.'' Mr Azad said a road connectivity programme has already been launched in the state for the construction of roads in rural areas.
