Mumbai, Apr 12 (UNI) Bhuj-based Asia MotorWorks Ltd (AMW) today showcased its heavy tonnage Global Truck Series here that included 4923 tractor, 4018 tractor, 4923 Tip Semi-Trailer, 2523 Rock&Box Body Tipper, 2518 Haulage and the 2518 Concrete Mixer.

The Heavy Commercial Vehicle segment has traditionally been dominated by Ashok Leylands and the Tatas. Explaining his business strategy, the managing director (MD) of AMW Anirudh Bhuwalka told UNI ''The trucks from the Ashokleyland and Tata's stable cost around 50 lakhs. At that steep price, it is difficult for an operator to break even and book profits. But our trucks are available in the region of Rs 15 lakhs to 28 lakhs. This makes it easier for a transporter to recover costs faster and book profits.'' He elaborated that a country's gross domestic product (GDP) is directly proportional to the growth of the transport sector and said that in the very first year of operation itself they have put 900 trucks on the road.

''As China and India emerge as the manufacturing hubs of the future, it is expected that the US and Australian markets will be serviced by China and the needs of the European and African markets will be catered to by India,'' he said.

Regarding the technology adopted by AMW, the MD revealed, ''Only our gear-box is imported. Rest all the parts are sourced and manufactured indigenously. This allows us to have a cost advantage over our rivals. The import of the gear-box was a strategic decision since 90 per cent of the problems faced by trucks arise from gear-box malfuctioning.'' AMW has a fully integrated manufacturing facility spread over 600 acres in Bhuj, Gujarat. ''The place offers us several tax-sops and concessions. We intend to use this to minimise production costs and subsequently the final costs of our trucks,'' Mr Bhuwalka added.
