3 injured in police firing at Jalna
Jalna, Maharashtra, Apr 10 (UNI) At least three people were injured in police firing, after Dalit activists went on a rampage and indulged in arson and stone pelting to protest the desecration of the statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Kanhaiyanagar locality here today.
Curfew was imposed from 1000 hrs as the situation in the town worsened after violent protests by the activists following the desecration of the statue at around 0630 hrs today.
The protestors torched three vehicles, including a bus of the state transport authority and allegedly attacked police vehicles, forcing the police to open fire in the air to quell the agitated mob, Superintendent of Police Chiranjeev Prasad told UNI.
According to him, three of the protestors were injured in police firing and admitted to the district civil hospital.
The authorities have imposed curfew in the troubled areas of the city, including Kanhaiyanagar from 1000 hrs, he said.
The activsts indulged in stone pelting, attacked the vehicles of Additional Superintendent of Police Rajendra Dahale and SP Chiranjeev Prasad, the police said.
Inspector General of Police (Special) Aurangabad range Bhagwantrao More rushed to the site to supervise the situation.
''The situation is tense now, but we are trying to restore peace,'' Mr More, told UNI.
Meanwhile, the Aurangabad police have sounded an alert in the city, the police added.
