Ambala, Apr 9 (UNI) The South African government would hand over two hard core criminals of the notorious Geong gang involved in a number of cases of murder and extortion, to the Indian government after completing legal and procedural formalities.

The two criminals, Surinder and Baljit wanted by the Haryana police carrying prizes on their heads, had escaped to South Africa on forged passport and documents from Nagpur late last year.

Giving this information here today, Ambala Police Range Inspector General S S Deswal stated that he along with Kaithal SP Navdeep Virk and other officials had gone to South Africa for getting the criminals extradited after the government took up the case with the South Africa government. He said assistance of Interpol was also sought to ensure the arrest of the criminals.

The IG said the police team had gone to South Africa after exchange of correspondence between the governments of the two countries. He said that the criminals were nabbed in Johannesberg during scrunity of the passports and documents which were found forged.

He said since there was no extradition treaty between the two countries, the issue was taken up at government-to-government level and the Interpol also helped. He said since the case was put up to the court, legal formalities were being completed through the Prosecutor in South Africa who is pursuing the case.

He hoped that the concerned court would permit the extradition of the criminals shortly since all the relevant papers and documents had been produced in the court there.

Surinder and Baljit are the members of the Joginder Geong gang involved in 8 cases of murders and extortion including the murder of Harish Arora of Kaithal in which a ransom of Rs 50 lakh was demanded. Geong operated from jail even after his arrest and Surinder and Baljit used to execute the threats given by Geong.

Surinder was instrumental in preparing the forged documents from Nagpur and had escaped to South Africa with his accomplice Baljit.

Baljit who was lodged in the Central Jail here, escaped while being taken to court for a case hearing in July 2005.
