Khanna takes over as LG, urges people to abide by the law

New Delhi, Apr 9 (UNI) Former bureaucrat and Ranbaxy Chairman Tejendra Khanna today took over as Lt Governor of Delhi for the second time in less than ten years and issued a strong message to Delhiites to respect the law of the land or face action.

While promising a fair and efficient administration, Mr Khanna urged the people in the city to stay within the boundaries of the law, pertaining to anything from land and buildings to traffic or pollution.

''I promise a people-sensitive and just administration, especially for the poor, but I request the citizens of the national capital not force the administration to take strong enforcement action,'' he said after taking oath of office and secrecy this morning.

''I do not want any addition to the weak enforcement in the city anymore,'' he said and announced formation of a 'single enforcement agency'under his chairmanship that could take ''tough decisions if required''.

Talking about revamping the 'civil policing system', he said a 24-hour 'Control Room' would be set up to receive public complaints on any violation.

''The complaints would be followed up in a time-bound manner,'' he said.

Mr Khanna also announced formation of an autonomous Delhi Urban Regulatory Authority that would help people to live peacefully in a neighbourhood while impartially giving an opportunity to people to earn a living.

In order to implement crucial infrastructural and Commonwealth Games projects in the city, he announced formation of a high-powered Empowered Group to act as a coordinating implementing agency.

Mr Khanna said a 'Delhi Vision Group' would be created comprising 'enlightened' members of the civil society to act as a long-range radar on key policy issues.

He also announced formation of a task force called the 'Special Traffic Group' to find a comprehensive solution to traffic and parking problems in Delhi.

The LG also indicated that his office would act as a single window grievance redressal point for the public.
