Greenpeace blueprint to reduce CO2 without hurting eco devlpmt

New Delhi, Apr 9 (UNI) Perched on the sharp divide between energy needs for development and combating climatic changes, the panacea for India lies in aggressive pursuance of renewable energy sources, which by 2050 would constitute its economic backbone, according to a report on Global Energy Outlook.

The 100-page 'India-specific' report lays down a 'practical blueprint' for reducing carbon dioxide emissions by four per cent in the next 43 years without compromising on energy needs for India's development or curbing economic development.

The reports says the target was achievable without hindering economic development or depending on hazardous nuclear energy, said Ananthapadmanabhan, Executive Director, 'Greenpeace India' while adding that dangeous sources like coal needed to be phased out.

K Srinivas, Energy Campaigner 'Greenpeace India' said the Energy (R)evolution scenario in the report lays down a rational road map to increase renewable energy usage and decrease energy consumption by 50 per cent through efficient parables.

Moreover, the reaction time to climatic changes has shrinked by leaps and it was time for hard decisions and giant steps to counter global warming that was devouring flora, fauna and contibuting to malaria cases, coastal flooding and water shortage, he added.

The report by German Aerospace Centre (DLR), prepared by specialists from the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics and commissioned by the European Renewable Energy Council and Greenpeace, also highlights the economic advantages of energy revolution scenario while stating that market for renewable energy was likely to grow to double-digit rate by 2050.
