Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 7 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy today described as ''unfortunate and a bad precedent'' the decision of the CPI(M) that Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty need not resign despite being found prima facie guilty of committing contempt of court by the High Court.

Addressing a press conference here, he said with the decision taken by the CPI(M) State Secretariat and State Committee, the party had lost the right to speak about political morality.

Even though Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan had declared that he would take a decision on the issue without erosion of moral values, he was now protecting Mr Mohammed Kutty who was found guilty by the High Court, Mr Chandy alleged.

He said the government had even put off the proposal to convene the state assembly on April 17 even after reaching a consensus with the Opposition as it was afraid of facing the House on the issue.

Mr Chandy said the state had seen the resignation of Congress ministers in the past in the wake of even adverse remarks by the courts.

But Mr Mohammed Kutty continues in power even after he was found guilty by the High Court, he said adding the CPI(M) always spoke about political morality but was hesitant to put it into practice.

Coming down heavily on the statement of CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat attacking the judiciary, Mr Chandy said such statements were not expected from a responsible leader of a political party.

Mr Chandy also urged the government to take necessary steps for the rehabilitation of the traders affected by the fire on the S M Street in Kozhikode on Thursday last in which seven people were killed, 50 injured and goods worth several crores of Rupees lost.
