Kashmiri literature, a blend of poetry and historiography: Rahi

New Delhi, Apr 6 (UNI) Bharatiya Jnanpith Award winner and renowned Kashmiri poet Prof Rehman Rahi said the literature of Kashmir ''is a rich blend of poetry and historiography.

Speaking at a function organised in his honour by the Kasheer Foundation, Prof Rahi said contemporary Kashmiri fiction, drama and poetry has been highly acclaimed by literary scholars in the country and aboard because of its universal appeal and message.

Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz presided over the function, which was also attended by noted literary figures including Padma Sachdev, Arun Kaul, Badri Bhan, Prof Riyaz Punjabi and Ms Suriya Hashmir, Director Doordarshan.

Prof Rahi, who recited some of his famous verses on the occasion, said for the first time the language had got recognition outside Jammu and Kashmir. This could provide writers and scholars opportunities for the promotion of rich Kashmir language, he added.

Mr Soz said Prof Rahi desrved the award as he had made immense contribution to the Kashmiri language through his writings.

''He is one of the greatest poets of the country,'' Prof Soz added.
