Indian fisherman injured in another Lankan shooting incident
Chennai, Apr 6 (UNI) An Indian fisherman was shot at and injured by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel at Kodiakarai off Nagapattinam coast this morning.
Reports received at the police headquarters here said the victim, Shanmugavelu, 26, sustained bullet injuries in the leg. The navy personnel opened fire without any provocation at around 0845 hrs.
He was brought to the shore around 1430 hrs and was admitted to Nagapattinam Government Hospital.
Shanmugavelu, along with seven others had ventured into the sea on April for fishing. When they were fishing near Kodiakarai, the Lankan Navy commandeered the Indian boat.
Though the fishermen raised their hands to prevent the attack, the Lankan Navy personnel opened fire, injuring Shanmugavelu.
After the navy personnel left the scene, the fishermen returned to the shore.
Today's incident comes close on the heels of killing of five Indian fishermen from Kanniyakumari allegedly by the Lankan Navy last week.
