Mumbai, Apr 6: The country's financial capital can save 20 per cent electricity if effective energy conservation measures are undertaken by domestic and high-end users in view of the loadshedding blues.

Tata Power Company (TPC), which supplies electricity to power distribution companies like BEST, Reliance Energy and domestic users in Mumbai said, efforts are on to plug the power deficit in Mumbai as the city is faced with the spectre of power cuts.

''However, this crisis can be avoided, if we take simple preventive measures through ''I will, Mumbai will'' movement,'' it said.

Mumbai is one of the few proud Indian cities to have enjoyed 24-hour uninterrupted power supply for long time. However, severe power shortage in Maharashtra together with Mumbai's unprecedented lifestyle boom have pushed the city's electricity demand beyond availability.

''Each one of you is requested to take this movement forward in two areas--your life outside the office and in the office itself.

Though seemingly simple, the below mentioned practices can go a long way in keeping Mumbai powerful,'' the company said in a statement.

It suggested consumers to shift usage from the 1000 hrs to 2000 hrs peak time and avoid adding to the load, rely on natural lighting during day time and switch on ACs an hour after starting work and switch off an hour before closing.

It also asked the users to run all ACs at 240 degree C.

''Ensuring that AC's operate at a 'comfortable' 240 degree C at all times will go a long way. One will use 3 to 5 per cent less energy for each degree if air conditioner is set above 22 degrees. So set the thermostat of your AC at 240 degree C to enjoy maximum comfort at the least cost,'' the statement added.

To save 5 per cent power, one should switch off devices from plug points left on when not in use. ''Switching them off will save power. ACs, TVs, DVDs, mobile chargers should be switched off from the plug time every single time,'' it said.

''Setting computers in Sleep and Hibernate modes, replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), using washing machines in off peak hours, are some of the other measures suggested by the company.

The release also said that offices can appoint one employee on each floor as a ''custodian'' for this movement.
