Police fire in air to disperse rioters in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Apr 5 (UNI) Police today intensified patrol with a view to maintaining law and order in communally sensitive Saraspur area of the walled city here, where two groups of different communities indulged into stone pelting.

Police and SRP jawans posted at the spot fired one round in air and ''mildly lathicharged'' the rioters when they indulged into stone pelting at each other and the forces at Nirmalpura locality in Saraspur area of the city last night around 2200 hours, police said.

Police said the trouble started when the two groups of youth from Harijan and Muslim communities had heated arguments over occupying of sittng place at road side eateries late last night.

Later, the situation worsened and both side started indulging in stone pelting at each other.

Soon other residents of both the communities joined the youths in stone throwing, forcing the police and SRP jawans to fire one round in the air to disperse them and to bring the situation under control.

Though none sustained injuries in police firing, several people received minor injuries in stone throwing, police added.
