NTPC plans JVs, expansion of existing stations
New Delhi, Apr 5 (UNI) Aiming to become a 50,000 MW company by 2012, NTPC today said it is focusing on capacity addition through green field projects, expansion of existing stations, joint ventures and takeover of State Electricity Boards' stations.
''NTPC has envisaged 75,000 MW plus installed capacity by 2017 which includes significant addition of hydro capacity and forays into non-conventional and nuclear power generation,'' Chairman T Sankaralingam told reporters here.
The company would generate 2,000 MW of nuclear energy by the middle of XIIth plan and is currently in talks with nuclear energy manufacturers and the government, he said adding that the largest hydro power plant (4,000 MW) will be set up in Arunachal Pradesh at Etalin and another 500 MW at Attunli.
The hydro project at Koldam (800 MW) is at advanced stages of implementation and first unit is likely to be commissioned by 2008-09. Loharinag Pala (600 MW) and Tapovan Vishnugad (520 MW) in Uttarakhand are under construction.
Under a strategic initiative, NTPC has entered into a manufacturing joint venture with Transformers and Electricals Kerela Ltd (TELK) and is into an collaborative tie-up with Society for Integrated Circuit Technology and Applied Research (SITAR) for identifying the technology provider for LED lamp manufacturing.
The company added 1,710 MW during the fiscal 2006-07 through its Vindhyachal-III, Unchahar-III and Kahalgaon-II projects, while 705 MW was made through acquisitions and 740 MW through joint ventures.
