Delimitation of constituencies in Meghalaya to be completed by June
Shillong, Apr 5 (UNI) The delimitation of constituencies in the state is expected to be completed within June this year along with other states in the country, Meghalay's Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said today.
Informing that only 18 states have already completed the process of delimitation of constituencies, Mr Naik said the Delimitation Commission officials from Delhi will hold the public hearing on May 10 and 11 at the State Central Library here to discuss various aspects of the delimitation process.
On the first day of the hearing, the Commission would cover on 37 constituencies under East, West and South Garo Hills districts, West Khasi and Jaintia Hills districts, the CEO said adding that on May 11, the Commission would hear on 23 constituencies from East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts.
Mr Naik also said the present set-up of the 60 constituencies in the state is faulty, ''which necessitated their delimitation.'' According to the proposed delimitation of constituencies, East Khasi Hills districts will have 17 instead of 19 constituencies, while West Garo will lose one from 15 to 14. West Khasi Hills (from six to seven), South Garo Hills (from two to three) and Ri-Bhoi districts (four to five) would gain one more constituency each, he said.
However, he said the number of constituencies in Jaintia Hills and East Garo Hills districts would remain seven each as earlier.
