Water supply only on alternate days in Mysore

Mysore, Apr 3 (UNI) The people of this city have started feeling the pinch of summer and consequent acute drinking water scarcity, as water supply was ensured only on alternate days.

City Corporation Commissioner K N Chandrasekhar said it was important to ensure equitable supply throughout the city. Rains had failed this season and most borewells in the area had dried up. The drinking water situation was not likely to ease till the onset of monsoon and the overhauling of the distribution network, he added.

The level of water in Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir, the main source of drinking water to not only the city but also Bangalore, today stood at 80.57 ft as against the maximum level of 124.80 ft.

The level was 94.94 ft the same day last year. If the present trend of dry weather continued, the level might go down fast and the region would face severe water scarcity in the coming days.

Even the second stage project of Melapura water works, to commence operations from this month, was delayed and was expected to be completed by this month-end or first week of May.

Meanwhile, BJP activists, including women, began a 24-hours dharna in front of the Vani Vilas Water Works, demanding proper water supply to the city.

Former Legislator A Ramadas alleged that though adequate water was available, the Corporation authorities were unable to distribute it properly due to lack of coordination among them and large scale misappropriation of funds meant for water supply projects. An indefinite dharna would be launched if the authorities failed to restore proper water supply within a week, he warned.
