Govt, party committed 'some mistakes' in Nandigram : CPI(M)

New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Formally admitting that ''some mistakes'' were committed by both the West Bengal government and the party while dealing with the Nandigram crisis, the CPI(M) today asked the party state committee to ''re-examine'' the issue in totality.

The party, at its three-day session of the 17-member Polit Bureau followed by 80-member Central Committeee, decided on the maximum limit of 2000 acres of land for any multi-product SEZ in West Bengal.

Briefing mediapersons on the deliberations of Central Committee meeting which concluded yesterday, Party General Secretary Prakash Karat said the compensation for the deceased and the injured in Nandigram would be decided soon after all the inquiry reports were pooled.

''It is necessary to decide which industries require SEZs.

No scope should be left for estate speculation. The exorbitant tax concessions provided for SEZs must be curtailed,'' he said.

Asked how the party plans to bail itself out of the Nandigram crisis which damaged its image, Mr Karat said, ''There is no doubt that the party will emerge stronger as we will convince the Left constituents, democratic forces and the people in general about the desirability of industrial development.'' He, however, parried questions relating to contents of CBI report on Nandigram carried in national English daily saying the party has got enough evidence to show the involvement of ''armed people'' from the other side (read) Maoists, Naxalites and members of the Trinamool Congress in creating the crisis and forcing the CPI(M) cadres and supporters to flee the area.

Mr Karat said his party wanted a judicial inquiry into the Nandigram episode. However, the Calcutta High Court intervened and ordered a CBI inquiry. The matter is still pending before the High Court.

After the inquiry, if any policy excesses are established, strict action should be taken.

He said the party will launch a nation-wide campaign to acquaint people with ''truth'' about the Nandigram incident.

The other issues on which the party has decided to launch similar campaigns are inflation, price rise and opening up of the retail trade to FDI.

On SEZ, Mr Karat said the party has also demanded that the Centre make substantial changes in the SEZ Act.

The Central Committee condemned the anti-democratic and disruptive tactics of BJP in the budget session of Parliament.

The BJP-RSS combine had stepped up their communal rhetoric which had led to a spate of communal incidents all over the country recently, he added.

Welcoming the participation of the Maoists in the Nepali interim government, hailing it as a ''landmark development,''the Central Committee strongly deplored the escalating military hostilties in Sri Lanka.

The CC, Mr Karat said called for resisting US imperialistic pressure on India, demanding implementation of the MS Swaminathan Commission recommendations on agriculture and also opposed the entry of foreign universities and setting up of private universities.
