Alert woman, agile neighbour help police nab chain snatchers
Bangalore, Apr 3 (UNI) An alert woman and her agile neighbour helped police nab a notorious gang involved in chain snatching and seize 1.75 kg of gold ornaments, Rs five lakh in cash and five motor cycles.
City Police Commissioner N Achyuta Rao said the gang, involved in scores of chain snatching cases, had evaded arrest for over one year. They used to commit three to four such crimes on a single day.
The arrested had committed crime under 19 police station limits, he added.
The incident occurred when Hemalatha of Rajajinagar, who was walking alone, was attacked by two of the motorcycle-borne gang members. The alert woman shouted for help and her neighbour Shivashankar gave a long chase on his bike and managed to catch the duo, identified as Shashi Shetty, who had come to settle down in the city from Navi Mumbai, and Keshava Kumar.
On the basis of information given out by them, police arrested three others -- Shetty's uncle Prabhakar Hegde, Prashanth Hegde and Lalithkumar Chaudhury. The last named used to buy the ornaments from the culprits, he said.
Hemalatha, Shivashankar and some other citizens who had helped the police solve tricky cases with their presence of mind were honoured by the Commissioner today.
