Six Seismic Research Centres to be set up in TN
Chennai, Apr 2 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister I Periyasamy told the Assembly today that six Seismic Research Centres would be set up in the State as it fell under Seismic Zones two and three.
Replying to a question, he said the Centres would be set up in Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Chennai.
Stating that the Centre had taken steps to set up a tsunami warning system in Hyderabad, he said Anna University and National Institute of Ocean Technology had been jointly carrying out research activities and disseminating information to the public through media.
The Government had also distributed handbooks people in coastal districts creating awareness about disasters. Besides, an experts committee had been constituted to give recommendation on taking preventive measures, he added.
While Centres to record earthquakes and tremors had been functioning in Chennai, Salem and Kodaikanal, a total of 52 disaster warning centres had been set up across the State, he said.
Mr Periyasamy said mangrove forests were also being raised along the coast which would serve as wind breakers to protect structures along the coastal areas.
Earlier, V Sivapunniyam (CPI) and Kovai Thangam (Congress) wanted to know the steps taken by the Goverment to forewarn people about disasters like tsunami and earthquake.
