Navy rescues SCI ship in Pacific Ocean

Kochi, Apr 2 (UNI) Indian Naval ships, which were on an overseas deployment to Southeast and Fareast Asia, came to the rescue of a Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) vessel 'MV Maharashtra' which experienced technical snag 270 nautical miles northeast off Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

An official release here today said, the ship on passage from Tianjin, China to Bander Imam Khomeini in Iran, was without power supply due to failure of her Main Diesel Alternators.

On receipt of a distress message on Saturday, INS Rana was promptly despatched to provide necessary assistance with a technical team comprising ten naval personnel, who were transferred by helicopter and boat to the merchant vessel.

The Naval team quickly rectified the diesel alternators, enabling restoration of power supply on board the merchant ship.

During the defect rectification, it was also found that the fuel tanks supplying the diesel fuel to the alternators were contaminated and a supply of fresh fuel was provided to ensure uninterrupted power supply, the release added.
