Lorry strike enters second day

Kochi, Apr 2 (UNI) As the lorry strike in Kerala entered the second day today, the authorities have seized 26 tanker lorries to prevent shortage of fuel.

An official said the tanker lorries were seized for violation of permit conditions.

He said as the strike entered the second day there was no evident shortage of fuel or essential commodities in the market.

The district administration would take action against the striking owners including cancellation of permits following a notice issued by Ernakulam District Collector Mohammed Hanish yesterday, the official said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Coordination Committee of the Lorry Owners P Ramachandran urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the issues on hand.

The lorry owners called the indefinite strike to protest against ten per cent hike in Motor Vehicle Tax, installation of speed governors they also demanded restoration of services to lorries through the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).
