Feminism is not taking away rights of men: Kanimozhi

Chennai, Apr 2 (UNI) Ms K Kanimozhi, poet and daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, today averred that feminism does not mean taking away the rights of men.

Inaugurating a National Conference on the ''Role of Women for India Ahead'', organised by the SRM University at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur near here, she said empowerment of women and educating women could change the society and would be the biggest wall of protection.

''What we are asking for is empowerment of women. It does not mean that we are taking something from you'', she said and added women should not be denied their due position in the society.

''We want our rightful place in the society. Do not deny what we deserve just because we are women'', she added.

Stressing on the importance of education for women, she referred to the highest literacy rate in Kerala and said it was very important to teach women about their rights and that they were equal among others.

''Women have to be taught what Constitution offers and what society has to offer them. Women's education is important to create an awareness that they have the right to live as equal citizens'', she said.

Quoting a French Feminist as saying that ''let was also be irresponsible (like men) and bad, Ms Kanimozhi said women had been performing double responsibilities as a responsible wife and also as a bread winner (by going to work). ''They are bearing two crosses.

But where is the recognition'', she asked.

Empowerment of women does not mean that women would displace the menfolk. ''Empowerment is to take our rightful place in the Society and not to displace you (men)'', she added.

She also appealed to the women to remain united as it would be difficult to take on the society singlehandedly.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Chinnapillai, who pioneered the concept of Women SHGs, for which former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee touched her feet in appreciation, exhorted the students to work towards ''creating a dowry-free and alcohol-free society.

The students whould enlighten their parents on not seeking dowry and added this would pave way for development of women.

Ms Chinnapillai said the ''Kalanjiam'' founded by her, had been identifying poor people living below poverty line, to help them form SHGS by creating a fund and encouraging savings.

University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu stressed the need for 100 per cent literacy rate for women. Schools and colleges have to be constructed in all villages and remote areas to achieve this, she added.
