Nursing student commits suicide in Andhra following harassment

Chittoor, Apr 1 (UNI) A student of the city-based Government Nursing College allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree at her native village yesterday, following harassment by the hostel warden and her husband, police today said.

Police sources said, Maheseswari, who was staying in the hostel attached to the nursing institute, was being harassed by the hostel warden and her husband who demanded sexual favours from the student.

She had lodged a police complaint against the warden and her husband.

In the complaint, the student said the warden was coercing her to respond to the sexual advances of her husband for several months.

As she had lodged a police complaint, the warden had expelled Maheseswari from the hostel four days ago.

After her expulsion, Maheseswari left for her native place, where she committed suicide, the police added.

Tension prevailed in the city over the incident as fellow hostellers, along with local college students, staged a dharna in front of the hostel demanding the warden be sacked immediately and severe action against the culprits.
