New Delhi, Apr 1 (UNI) The Union Home Ministry has alerted Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttarakhand about the possibility of naxalites increasing their sphere of influence in these states, while trying to get onto new areas in other states already infested by the ultras.

The CPI(Maoists) have been trying to increase their sphere of influence and activity in parts of the four states and also in new areas in some of the already affected states, according to the 2006-07 annual report of the ministry.

In all, 13 states have been identified as being affected by naxalism.

Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu do have presence of naxalites, but the menace is not as serious as in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.

The report expressed satisfaction that naxal violence had significantly come down in Andhra Pradedsh in terms of both incidents and casualties in 2006, though recent seizures of huge consignments of rocket shells and rocket launchers were a matter of concern.

It said the Maoists had also been attempting to intensify their efforts for social moblisation.

In this context, it was pointed out that the Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF), set up in May 2005 for this purpose, had been enlarged into the People's Democratic Front of India (PDFI).

The report said there was overall improvement in the naxal situation in the country, though Chhattisgarh continues to be at the receiving end during 2006, claiming largest number of incidents and casualties.

Chhattisgarh has seen higher levels of violence and casualties, it said, attributing stepped up naxal violence to greater offensive by naxalites to derail Salva Judum, a voluntary and peaceful initiative by local people against naxalites in Dantewada district of the state.
