Centre in legal preparation to get SC stay vacated
New Delhi, Apr 1 (UNI) Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today continued legal consultation in his bid to vacate the Supreme Court stay on implementation of the 27 per cent OBC quota in elite institutions.
According to sources, the Minister met the Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to discuss the issue.
They said that besides requesting the apex court for vacation of the stay, the government might also ask for referring the issue to a larger bench.
Mr Singh had yesterday reiterated that the UPA Government will take all constitutional measures to get for vacation of the stay.
He sought to point out that the Supreme Court had not rejected the provision of quota in principle.
The Minister had, however, made it clear that the Congress-led coalition would do all to avoid any confrontation with the Supreme Court.
He had also said that all-party meeting would be convened after the SAARC summit to discuss the issue.
The court had on March 29 stayed till further orders the operation of the notification issued in January this year under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 providing 27.5 per cent reservations to the OBCs in admission to the centrally-run educational institutions from the academic year 2007-2008.
