UPA-Left meet to review SC's order on OBC quota
New Delhi, Mar 31: The Manmohan Singh government will hold a meeting of the UPA allies and the Left parties to review the Supreme Court's order staying reservations for the OBCs in institutes of higher education soon after the SAARC meet concludes on April 4.
This was disclosed by CPI(M) senior leader and Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury to newspersons here after the party's top leadership concluded its political agenda for discussions by the Central Committee which meets this afternoon for a three-day session.
While terming the apex court's order as ''contradictory'' and against its own logic in the backdrop of a nine-member bench deciding in favour of reservations following the the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations, Mr Yechury said it was a ''grave matter'' and had to be addressed by the political system as a whole.
Mr Yechury said after the UPA-Left meeting on the SC's order, the government would discuss it with other political parties as well.
The party polit bureau also finalised two other subjects for discussion on the party's strategy for UP polls, and review of the SEZ policy at the national level.
The CPI(M) Polit bureau deliberations which began this morning at the party headquarters are being held in the backdrop of the Nandigram incident, and other national and international developments during the last three months.
Earlier West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was non committal whether the Nandigram crisis had been resolved following the appeal of his predecessor and veteran Communist Jyoti Basu to the Left constituents and his own admission about commiting a ''mistake.'' ''I am not the spokesman of the party.'' On being questioned about Nandigram, he said, ''my party secretary will talk to you.'' West Bengal Left Front Chairman Biman Bose, who had a heated discussion with mediapersons before the delibrations began, chose to ignore the media. However, polit bureau member and Rajya Sabha MP Ms Brinda Karat said, ''this is a routine meeting.''
