Nagpur, Mar 31 (UNI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief K S Sudershan today alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre is compromising national security to stay in power.

In a statement here, Mr Sudershan said the recent killing of five persons in Rajauri district of Jammu and Kashmir was a direct result of the demand by the People's Democratic Party (PDP), a constituent of the UPA, to withdraw security forces from the state.

''The Prime Minister probably thinks nothing of sacrificing Hindus at the altar of terrorism to keep his coalition government in power,'' the Sarsanghachalak said.

''The undue haste being shown on the 'Ramsetu' (Adam's Bridge) canal scheme only strengthens the suspicion that the Central government is least concerned about the country's safety and the well-being of its citizens,'' he said.

The government has chosen the option that is not only the most expensive, but would also put lives at risk in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in case of a Tsunami, Mr Sudershan said, adding that the government did not feel it necessary to get Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) or the Chennai-based NIOT to study the impact of the project.

The United States (US) is also trying to intrude into the strait between India and Sri Lanka to gain control of the area, which is dangerous for the country's security, Mr Sudershan alleged.

''It reeks of an attempt by the US to deny India the thorium found in the sand that collects at the base of the Ramsetu,'' he added.

The US does not want India to become self-sufficient in atomic energy by using thorium, he said.
