Road caves in busy area of North Kolkata
Kolkata, Mar 31 (UNI) A large portion of a North Kolkata road collapsed today causing panic and disruption of vehicular traffic in the locality.
Police said a stretch of about 25 feet of Gallif Street collapsed perilously while work was on for reparing an underground conduit.
However, no one was injured in the incident they said.
Traffic was diverted following the subsidence.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor-in-Council (Road) Tuhin Bera said the subsidence started yesterday but it got worse today morning.
He said the corporation had detected signs of subsidence in the area a year back and took some temporary measures but when work started yesterday for repairing an old underground conduit, the road caved in.
Police said the work was on for repairing the road and movement of traffic was expected to be restored in the next few days.
