Bangalore, Mar 31 (UNI) Mahaveer Jayanti, the 2606th birthday of Lord Mahaveer, was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety by the Jain community in many parts of Karnataka, today.

Processions were taken out and religious discourses organised in Jain temples to celebrate the day.

A world peace march, flagged off by city police Commissioner N Achyutha Rao, was taken out from Town Hall this morning.

In a function organised by the Jain Institute of Vascular Sciences here, Governor T N Chaturvedi asked the Jains to continue their tradition of social activities.

Speaking at the function, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy greeted the Jain brethren and said he was proud of the Jain community who were extending healthcare to the poor and deprived in the state.

Jain Yuva Sanghathan President Mahaveerchand Khabiya, in his message, said that in today's world, the principles and preachings of Lord Mahaveer were very much needed.

''As we can see violence growing dangerously all over the world, the preachings of Lord Mahaveer about ''live and let live,'' ''ahimsa,'' ''anekant'' and ''truth'' have a greater role to play in bringing world peace,'' he said.
