JIVS launches training in Diabetic foot care

Bangalore, Mar 31 (UNI) Jain Institute of Vascular Sciences (JIVAS) in association with World Diabetic Foundation (WDF) today launched training programme for health care workers and providing diabetic foot care in rural areas in Karnataka.

JIVAS Director K R Suresh said complications of foot infection in diabetics was higher than many major surgical procedures like vascular or heart bypass procedures. About five per cent in urban and 3.5 per cent in rural population had diabetes in the country which now had nearly 30 million diabetes patients.

With an intent to provide service in rural areas JIVAS would set up mobile clinics across the state. The feature of the programme named as 'Padarakshane' was to train health care workers for diabetic foot care, assist in establishing foot care centres and mobile foot clinics.

Governor T N Chaturvedi who inaugurated the first mobile clinic called upon the Jain community to concentrate more on rural areas in giving health services to the deprived.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who was present, said there was an increase in the number of patients who could not afford treatment at a high cost and the project launched by JIVAS would be of great help to the deprived.
