Kolkata, Mar 31 (UNI) In the midst of a raging nationwide controvery over the use of plastic woven sacks in place of the traditional jute bags by the sugar and foodgrain industries, the Indian Plastic Federation(IPF) has decided to widen its export basket manifold to remain highly competive.

Stating this, IPF spokesman K D Agarwala here today said though a recent judgement of the Gujarat High Court had allowed them to supply plastic woven sacks to the foodgrain industry to meet maximum 25 per cent of its demand and 30 per cent of all sugar bags,it was far less than the capacity of the whole industry which presenty stood at 800,000 sacks per annum.

Accordingly, Mr Agarwala said, the IPF had decided to concentrate more on exporting Indian High Density Polythene(HDPE) to a number of emerging markets in the world including Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand and several contries in the Middle East to remain viable and competitive in the highly demanding market.

Further elaborating, he said in 2005-06 they had exported to the tune of Rs 500 crores mainly to the USA, the U K and France and the very next year the amount was increased by Rs 200 crores more, while by 2010-11 IPF expected to export to the tune of Rs 1500 worth of HDPE woven sacks to a large number of countries across the world, recording three fold increase.

Regarding its order position within the country, Mr Agarwala said though the government had recently floated tenders for 190 crores plastic sacks, IPF had been awarded orders to supply only 3.6 million of them within the next one week, Mr Agarwala regretted and demanded equal opportunity for them to compete with the jute industry.
