AP all-party delegation meets PM

New Delhi, Mar 31 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought his intervention in stopping the construction of Babli Project upstream of Sri Ram Sagar Project on Godavari river in Maharashtra.

The delegation, headed by the CM, requested the PM to impress upon the Maharashtra government to stop the construction of Babli Project on Godavari River. The proposed project, located within the submergence of Sri Ram Sagar Project of Andhra Pradesh has a potential to greatly affect the capacity of the Sri Ram Sagar Project, which is a lifeline to seven drought prone districts of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.

The memorandum submitted by the delegation, said the project was violative of the agreement signed by the Chief Ministers of both AP and Maharashtra in 1975 besides contravening the Godavari Tribunal Award.

The delegation said it apprehended that the Maharashtra government was planning to construct 11 more barrages on Godavari River, between Paithan Dam upto AP border, even as it has already fully utilised the allocated quota of Godavari River.

They appealed to the PM to impress upon the Maharashtra government to stop any such plans.

The delegation included former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and representatives from all political parties including AP Congress president K Kesava Rao, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, (BJP), Mr S Malla Reddy, (CPI)-M, Mr K Narayana, (CPI), Mr Vinod Kumar, (TRS), Mr Mohd Morzam Khan, (MIM).

It also submitted three memorandams to the Prime Minister. These include reservations for OBCs in Central Educational Institutions. The delegation requested the Central government to overcome the legal hurdles created by the recent Supreme Court order.

They also requested the Centre to increase the assistance to Andhra Pradesh for educational scholarships to OBC students as the state government has decided to provide scholarship to every eligible student from these sections from 2007-08.

The other memorandum sought support from the Centre for improving the social and educational condition of backward Muslims in the state. It also sought higher Central assistance for providing scholarships to Muslim students in AP.

The third memorandum sought personal intervention of the Prime Minister for instructing the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry to exempt Beedi industry from the purview of notification on July 5, 2006 stipulating publication of pictorial representation of ill effects of tobacco.
