Witnesses in Khairlanji case to be examined on May 3, 4

Nagpur, Mar 30 (UNI) The prosecution in the case pertaining to last year's killing of four members of a dalit family by villagers in Khairlanji in Bhandara district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra will examine the formal witnesses on May 3, 4 and 5.

The prosecution will submit on April 13 a list of the formal witnesses (persons who assisted the investigation) that it would like to examine on three days. The examination of the eyewitnesses would come later.

Meanwhile, First Ad Hoc Judge and First Additional Sessions judge S S Das, who is hearing the case, has extended till April 13 the judicial custody remand (JCR) of all the 11 accused in the case.

Ujwal Nikam, the Special Public Prosecutor in the case appointed by the state government, appeared before the court for the first time today along with Shashibhushan Wahane, who is assisting him.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet under sections 120 (B), 302, 449 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and sections 3, 2 and 6 of the Atrocities Act against the 11 accused.

Earlier, 36 persons, who had been arrested in connection with the case, were set free as the CBI did not file any charges against them due to lack of evidence.

Surekha Bhotmange (45), daughter Priyanka (18), and sons Roshan (23) and Sudhir (21) were lynched by a mob in Khairlanji late on the night of September 29 last over a land dispute.
