Model Broadcast Bill in Winter session of Parliament -- Priya

Bhubaneswar, Mar 30 (UNI) Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dashmunsi today hinted the Model Broadcast Bill for the electronic media will be introduced in the winter session of Parliament.

Mr Dasmunsi told newsmen after a review meeting here that the UPA government would try to introduce the Bill during the monsoon session of Parliament, stating that in case it failed to do so, the Bill would be definitely tabled during the winter session.

The Union Minister said the Draft Bill was ready and would be placed before the Cabinet after few rounds of discussion with various stakeholders.

He claimed that the Model Broadcast Bill would be most progressive and media-friendly and said the viewers in the country would have the benefit to view 400 channels after the Bill was passed in Parliament.

On the Conditional Access System (CAS), Mr Dasmunsi said initially this would be introduced in all the metropolis during the first phase and cities like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Bhopal would be covered during the second phase and then extended to other cities in the country by the end of 2009.

The Union Minister said Orissa would be given priority in the second phase issue of license for the private FM radio services which would commence sometime in mid 2007.

On the poor signal problem of Radio and TV in the Kandhmal district of Orissa, Mr Dasmunsi said his Ministry had received several complaints and assured that an expert team would soon visit the area to look into the problem.
