Deve Gowda wants UPA to get SC to vacate stay on OBC quota
New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) Janata Dal (Secular) President and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today asked the UPA Government to take a pro-active stand on reservation issue and get the Supreme Court stay vacated to provide for reservation benefits for OBC students in higher professional educational institutions.
Mr Gowda, in a statement, said reservation was the only way to bridge the chasm in the society and his party always believed that reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs and minorities in education and employment was an integral aspect of Constitutional responsibilities.
As far as judiciary was concerned he has full faith and trust in the Supreme Court.
Stating that the political will was needed to implement such important issues, the former PM reminded the UPA that when he was Chief Minister in Karnataka, he had implemented quotas for OBCs and Muslims in 1994 itself taking all parties into confidence. The scheme had worked successfully for over a decade without problems, he said.
