New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) India today announced a Rs 2,610.14 crore aid package for Bhutan, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations based on ''our strategic and economic interests in an area of high geo-political sensitivity.'' The package under 'Aid to Bhutan' Non-Plan budget of the Ministry of External Affairs towards the Himalayan nation's extended Ninth Plan (July 2002-June 2008) would comprise three heads: development subsidy, India's project-tied assistance and refunds and subsidies.

The decision taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would support the new King of Bhutan and Bhutan's transition to a Constitutional democracy.

Briefing reporters, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said it would also generate opportunities for Indian companies to participate in major projects and strengthen goodwill for India in Bhutan by fulfilling New Delhi's existing commitments.
