Reshuffle police officials for fair polls in UP: Cong to EC

New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) The Congress has asked the Election Commission to replace police officials in each constituency and district of Uttar Pradesh for ensuring free and fair assembly elections in that state.

In a letter to the Commission which was released to the press today, AICC Treasurer Motilal Vora said the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in the state ''has prepared intensively for the elections'' by removing ''inconvenient officials at an alarming rate throughout its regime'' since 2003.

But the Commission had ordered some changes only at the levels of Divisional Commissioner, DIG, IG, Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, Mr Vora said.

The party also appealed to the Commission to consider allowing voters to cast ballots on the basis of any credible identity cards without restricting it to the voter identity cards issued by the EC.

This was necessary as the level of poverty and illiteracy in the state was high, the Congress said.
