Newly-wed couple drowns in Bhakra canal
Fatehgarh Sahib, Mar 29 (UNI) A newly-wed couple was feared drowned today when their car fell in the Bhakra canal near village Ferozepur in this district.
Even after six hours of continuous efforts, the police was still searching for the bodies of the couple, Hartaj Singh (23) and his wife Mandeep Kaur (21), residents of village Bhari.
Hartaj's brother-in-law Ashdeep Singh (13), who was with them, was able to open the car's door in time and to escape from the fast currents of the canal.
Mandi Gobindgarh SHO Sukhjit Virk, who was also at the spot told UNI that neither the bodies of the couple nor the car so far have been retrieved but efforts were being made to trace them and divers have been called in. Senior police officials including SSP Fatehgarh Sahib Nilabh Kishore have also reached the spot to supervise the rescue work.
Hartaj Singh was posted at Government Elementary School, Kotla Badla while Mandeep Kaur was Government Elementary School, Salarmajra of district Fatehgarh Sahib.
They were married about two months back and were taking Ashdeep for a medical examination in Khanna after completing some work at District Education Office at Fatehgarh Sahib, Karamjit Singh, father of Hartaj Singh told UNI
