3 awarded life in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case
New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) A city court today sentenced three men to life imprisonment in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
According to complainant Harvinder Kaur, five people -- H P Bharadwaj, R P Tiwari, Jagdeep Giri, Kamlesh and Suraj Giri -- had burnt alive her husband, two sons and a son-in-law in an East Delhi locality on November 1-2, 1984 when the anti-Sikh riots broke out following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajender Kumar, on the basis of evidence and argument, handed down life imprisonment to Bharadwaj, Tiwari and Jagdeep Giri under sections 147 and 302 of the IPC. A fine of Rs 5000 each was also slapped on them.
However, since Ms Kaur was unable to identify Kamlesh and Suraj Giri in the court, both were acquitted.
